Ballast Water Management (BWM)

Did You Know?

The BWM regulations require foreign and domestic flag vessels to abide by the BW discharge standards in the US waters. Coast Guard will check BWM activities and procedures on board for reporting and recordkeeping and check for its timeliness, accuracy, and completeness. The ship's BWM plan includes crew training to be validated during the vessel and port state inspections.

Accredited Certification

Earn professional certificates approved by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and/or Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). Most countries accept Class-approved training certificate as equivalent for local endorsements. Check with your flag state for endorsement requirements.

This is an ABS-approved course. Candidates will earn an ABS-approved course completion certificate upon successful completion of this course.

This course is also approved by the US Coast Guard. US citizens can earn a USCG-approved course completion certificate by passing a proctored online test from a USCG-approved location.


This course is designed to provide sufficient knowledge and understanding of the ballast water management regulations and operational compliances, required under the US laws and the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) adopted in February of 2004 that entered into force in September of 2017. Candidates who successful completion of the course will meet the competency and training requirements of 33 CFR 151, Subpart C and Subpart D, for ballast water management applicable to merchant marine professionals working in US waters and in the Deepsea.

The course covers the impact of uncontrolled ballast water admissions into restricted waters, and systems and technologies available to control such releases. The candidates will also learn the operational aspects of recordkeeping and maintenance of the BWMS when onboard.
