This course is required for all 2nd Mates upgrading to Chief Mate/Master.  The course provides:

  • knowledge of stability principles and practical application to a variety of ship types
  • includes the theories and factors affecting trim and stability and measures to preserve trim and stability, the effect of damage, consequent flooding of compartments and IMO/USCG recommendations concerning ship stability
  • describes the use of stability and trim diagrams and stress-calculating equipment.

This course satisfies the following STCW 2010 and CFR training requirements:

  • 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(ii) and 11.307(a)(3)(ii) for STCW endorsements as Chief Mate or Master on vessels of 3,000 GT or more and 46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(ii) and 11.313(a)(3)(ii) for STCW endorsements as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of more than 500 GT and less than 3,000 GT.
  • Tasks from NVIC 10-14 and NVIC 11-14: 9.10.A, 11.2.A, 11.3.A, 11.3.B, 11.3.C, 11.3.D, 14.1.A, 14.1.B, 14.1.C, 14.1.D, 14.2.A, 14.3.A, and 17.2.A.
